Golden Globes 2019 - Fashion Review

Lights, Camera and Action

"The number one goal of actor is to entertain.  Anything else is vanity."

The Show

"Life's a box of chocolates Forrest, you never know what you're gonna get"  - Forrest Gump (1994)

The 76th Golden Globes affair was held on Sunday, January 6, 2019 with Sandra Oh and Adam Samberg taking center stage at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.    The actual show and even the fashion was a bit milky bland.   However, there were a few movies and television shows this year that were incredible, well acted, entertaining and overall major hits among the populace.  My two favorites films were A Star is Born with songstress Lady Gaga and director, actor Bradley Cooper plus Bohemian Rhapsody with Rami Malek.  I was thrilled when Rami won Best Actor and Bohemian Rhapsody took the nod for Best Drama film of 2019.  If you haven't seen these two films - get to the theater pronto. As for television series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime) achieves all the fireworks for top entertainment.  Of course those who gave acceptance speeches that exuded grace and gratitude were memorable while all the others yapping away were a yawn fest.  Check out my piece on Grace and Gratitude, which is my motto for 2019.

The Fashion

As for fashion, well there were a few major hits and a number of misses.   Lots of off the shoulder concoctions, various hues, sparkle, glitz, black, black and white finishing with solid white.  The black and white numbers were reminiscent of  Grace Kelly, 1929 - 1982, actress, Princess of Monaco. Makeup and jewels were refined and minimal.  The overall vibe was elegance though perhaps understated.

The Movie Star Glamour Queens

Top Three

Magnificent Mary Poppins

"Practically perfect in every way." Mary Poppins

Emily Blunt - Alexander McQueen:  Emily was stunning in a sleeveless silver lace gown with minimal jewelry and subtle grey eye shadow.  The effect was stop the press when paired with her husband, John Krasinki. These two were the golden couple of the evening.

Welcome - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

"Fashion you can buy, but style you possess. The key to style is learning who you are, which takes years. There's no how-to road map to style. It's about self expression and, above all, attitude." —Iris Apfel

Rachel Brosnahan - Won Best Performance in a Television Series - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: If you haven't seen The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime) you are missing out on the best television series in years.  Not only is the show witty, interesting and loosely based on the late Joan Rivers, the fashion is over the top fabulous.  Brosnahan did not disappoint at the Golden Globes this year by wearing a canary yellow frock that was refreshing, classic and show stopping.  Well played Mrs. Maisel!

A Star is Born

"People will stare. Make it worth their while." —Harry Winston

Lady Gaga - Winner for Best Original Song - Valentino:  Lady Gaga was THE movie star of the evening dripping in 100 carats worth of of diamonds while draped in an off the shoulder princess lilac gown.  She simply out staged everyone on the red carpet.  The movie, A Star is Born, is an incredible film which I have seen twice.  Gaga was nominated for Best Actress and I wish she had won.  Gaga's entrance on the red carpet was reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour.  The matching blue hair, eye shadow and jewelry was drop dead gorgeous. Gaga definitely gave a nod to Judy Garland who starred in the original A Star is Born in 1954.   A star definitely was born.  Gaga nailed it.

Missed the Mark

“Have I gone mad? I'm afraid so, but let me tell you something, the best people usually are.”
― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Snow Queen Gone Freaky

Jamie Lee Curtis:  The white ensemble from head to toe was terribly chilly.  Curtis has an amazing figure and should have worn red, black or a color infused frock to enhance her beauty.  Additionally, the makeup and hair did not flatter this beauty and instead washed her out to a shade of sour milk. Where was a splash of color on her lips?  The absence of fillers was refreshing yet the overall ensemble was not flattering.   Though she is a young 60 there are many other famous women her age and older that rock their age with appropriate attire and makeup.   Perhaps Curtis doesn't care which is fine too.  Luckily, many do and I  for one am a believer in putting your best self forward always.  As women we have the luxury of makeup and vivid hues to enhance assets.  It is your choice on how you want to be perceived.  In this case, the reception across the telly was quite shocking.  Lastly, I saw Curtis two years ago in Sun Valley, Idaho and she was beautiful in person.

The Queen - Best Dressed

Effortlessly confident, smart, sophisticated elegance, poise and manners
And, the award goes too....

Sandra Oh

"What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language." —Miuccia Prada

The Queen of the Golden Globes 2019 - Sandra Oh -  Winner of  Best Actress in a Television Drama for Killing Eve (BBC America)  Sandra Oh was the woman of the evening on this night. The old Hollywood glamour was ever present in each dress she wore from white to red.  The makeup, jewelry and her vibrant personality shone brightly.  She was also a gracious host along with Andy Samberg though the show was dull which seems to be par for the course.  The red lips also added a hint of glamour which is so Hollywood.  Classic apparel and elegant makeup always signals Forever Chic Style.  Hats off to Sandra!

Up next is the Oscars.  Let's hope those in the fashion industry step up their game and drape the actresses in more glorious gowns.   And, perhaps my favorite films of 2018 and celebrities will receive an Oscar. The world at large loves movies and television series that entertain, tell a story, evokes tears, laughter and joy.  Let the game begin!
