The Call of the Wild - Fall 2013

The roar of the animal kingdom can be seen everywhere in Fall 2013.  Recently, at a local department store, it was interesting to notice all the women wearing a meow motif piece in brown and camel - Cheetah or black and grey - Leopard.  The message was clear, animal prints remain classic, royally regal and in an vast array of apparel and accessory choices. Of course, never wear animal print from head to toe.  The reason why is the pelt will wear you and not the other way around.  For instance, recently several celebrities were wearing tight fitting cheetah print dresses and rather than noticing the person - it is the print that is recognized. Less is always best when it comes to taking on anything from the wild.

Listed are the top five Forever Chic Style  animal categories.  The goal is to help you locate an item or to seek out a similar style at your desired price point.  For me, I generally purchase a more expensive piece that will last over many years.  In today's economy, I highly recommend buying one well made clothing item in a quality fabric rather than several at cheaper costs.  The end result is a long lasting beautiful piece that is cherished and worn often.  A closet of cheap, flimsy and ill fitting apparel is wasteful and not worth the money spent.  So, spend wisely.

I.   Sumptuous and Soft Playful Scarves:  A well made scarf in a animal print adds drama to the face and  provides warmth during the chilly days and nights.  Last year, my stepdaughter gave me a leopard print scarf with orange and it is simply divine!

If I were to buy only one item this season in an animal print  - this is it....a scarf!!  Hear the roar!

Audrey Hepburn, Charade (1963)

 About Audrey Hepburn

"She always under dressed instead of overdressed.  Nobody in the world looked better in plain white pants and a white blouse.  Whatever she put on became perfectly elegant.  Without a stick of jewelry, she looked like a queen."  Eva Gabor

"Audrey rarely skimped on quality.  If she wore a shirt, it was a good shirt, a first class shirt! Or a first class hat!....But simple - I mean, if she was gardening, or cooking, or something like that." Audrey Wilder a close friend of Audrey Hepburn

The White Queen (Starz - 2013) Mini Series based on Philippa Gregory Novels

The White Queen is based on a series of historical fiction novels by author, Philippa Gregory.  The backdrop of the story is the bitter and violent struggle of the War of the Roses (House of York versus House of Lancaster lineage) beginning in 1464 with the nation at war for the last nine years fighting cousin against cousin over who is the rightful heir to the throne of England.  And, when the a victor is named, loyalty by most is thrown out the window and instead power and greed is eagerly sought after from the spoils of war and kingship.

The White Queen covers three books- The White Queen - Elizabeth Woodville,  The Red Queen - Margaret Beaufort, and The Kingmaker's Daughter - Anne Neville.  The focus of the three powerful women is to protect and seek out  the thrown for either spouse or child under the cunning guise of following the one in power.  Each deftly uses the art of grace and diplomacy in obtaining their hidden goals knowing deep down that any strident and verbal behavior is considered and shown to be a path to nowhere. Elizabeth Woodville, Rebecca Ferguson, is the central character who marries King Edward IV, Jeremy Iron's son, Max,  and is daughter of Jacquetta of Luxembourg, Janet McTeer.   Margaret Beaufort, Amanda Hale, Countess of Richmond and Derby, with a Lancaster son, Henry VII, who acquiesces to Woodville, until King Edwards passes.  Last is Anne Neville, Fay Marsay, King Richard III wife, daughter of Earl of Warwick played by James Frain.  Additionally another great character is the icy King Edward's mother, Duchess Cecily, Caroline Goodall.

The British television series is utterly captivating with incredible sets and costumes, brilliant acting, fresh faces and an ingenious script.  History buffs and alike will find The White Queen a wonderful historical romp along with a deadly depiction of the human condition that seemly remains intact in today's chaotic world.  The constant struggle for power, greed and the endless jealousy of the fortune's of others keeps the audience wanting more from this engaging series.  And, like all twisted tales about mankind, when pursuing the seven deadly sins, justice is always served. Highly recommend The White Queen, Starz.

Captain Phillips (2013): Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi, Barkhad Abdirahman, Faysal Ahmed, Mahat M. Ali

Captain Phillips is a true story based on the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US MV Maersk Alabama.   This harrowing tale is a gripping thriller between Captain Phillips, Tom Hanks, the crew of the Alabama, an unarmed ship, and the US Navy against the Somali hijackers. The film opens with a lone ship traveling in open waters on a delivery route near the Cape Horn off of Africa.  The Somali pirates speed towards the Alabama with the plan of overtaking the ship and it contents with the objective of bringing in millions for the warlords based Somali.  The $30k offered is a mere pittance.  Nothing will stop the pirates.

Muse, Barkhad Abdi, is brilliant as the lead hijacker who forcefully overtakes the ship and the captain.  In one poignant scene, Muse, looks into the eyes of Phillips, and says, "Look at me.  I am the captain now!"  The crew safely hidden, turns off the electricity and begins the process of trying to save the captain and the bridge crew.  Phillips is taken hostage on the lifeboat and herein begins the terrifying saga between the three Somali pirates and Captain Phillips.  At 145 miles off the Somali coast, the US Navy and the Navy Seals seek to overcome the pirates and take Phillips back to safety.

Captain Phillips is a bone chilling and edge of your seat film.  The courage of Phillips and the determination of Muse is hands down captivating.  Captain Phillips, aptly reminds everyone to never take on the US Navy.  The filming in the small lifeboat capsule captures the sweat, anger and fear between all the players.

The story, the script and the acting is Oscar worthy so far in 2013.  Captain Phillips, indeed, could be the film of the year.   The audience is riveted and rooting for the Phillips from start to finish.  Yet, the acting of the Somali pirates also touches a chord.  The emotions are high and the crescendo of the film makes for a moving experience.  All and all, the movie is well told and portrays an American hero.   Must see in 2013.

Notes:  The director of the film kept Hanks and Abdi and other pirate actors from meeting until the scene on the bridge of the ship. Also, the line mentioned above was ad libbed by Abdi.  Hanks on The Today Show mentioned the closeness of the actors on the lifeboat was a gritty experience. Today, ships in the open ocean carrying cargo travel together and not alone.

October Forever Chic Style Flash - The Essential Beauty Products

Fall is here and now is the time to clean out closets, give clothes to charity, update wardrobes and review essential beauty products for the wet and cold winter months.  With extremely sensitive skin, my search for beauty products that do not create a reaction is first and foremost.   Many products contain fragrances,  plant extracts or chemicals which can lead to a nasty red disaster on the face, eyes or body. Listed are five Forever Chic Style recommendations that I use on a daily basis. All work wonders for my sensitive skin.

1. The Ultimate Sensitive Skin Body Soap:  Dove Beauty Bar sensitive skin unscented ($3.65 per bar) - Everyday starts with a simple bar of soap.  And, for sensitive skin - Dove is the one to use on a daily basis.   This little bar cleanses, moisturizes, doesn't clog pores, is fragrance free and hypoallergenic.  Widely recommended by dermatologists and pediatricians.  In fact, my dermatologist recommends taking  bar of soap when traveling.  Never use any other if you have sensitive skin.

2.   Essential Body Lotion: Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion ($10.99):   The ultimate body lotion to smooth on after a shower.  The lotion contains ACTIVE NATURALS Colloidal Oatmeal and other ingredients to keep skin moist for 24 hours.   For dry skin, Aveeno is the perfect solution leaving skin soft, smooth and hydrated.  And, it is fragrance free, nongreasy and noncomedogenic and dermatologist recommended. Perfect for sensitive skin.

3.   Outstanding Face Sunscreen:  Yes, even during the fall and winter months it is important to use a facial sunscreen daily.  Clarins UV Plus HP SPF 40 Day Screen ($40) glides on easily combined with moisturizer and foundation.  Clarins' claims that this sunscreen shields facial skin from daily sun damage with 100% mineral filters.  Fights free radicals and DNA damage deep within the skin’s surface with organic Cantaloupe — Clarins’ powerful new anti-oxidant from Provence. Invisible protection so sheer, it pairs perfectly with any moisturizer.  Again, for sensitive skin, this sunscreen for me leaves my skin rash and irritated free.

4.  Leading Eye & Correction Concealer:  Cle' de Peau's Beaute' Concealer ($70) covers red spots, dark circles etc., beautifully. The formula is made with hyaluronic acid and green tea covering imperfections while illuminating the skin.  The cost is high yet one tube will last one to two years.   Celebrities that use Cle' de Peau's Beaute' Concealer are Nicole Kidman, Kate Moss, Jennifer Connelly, Kate Winslet, Ellen Pompeo, Amanda Seyfried and Jessica Alba as reported in Town & Country, February 2013.

5.  Sensational Lip Moisturizer and Plumper:  Looking for the Angelina Jolie pout?  Search no more - Dior Addict Lip Mazimizer ($31) is the answer.   The blend of collagen and marine-based fillers smooth and moisturize the appearance of the skin.   After 15 days of use, lips will look noticeably fuller and defined.  It is a wonderful base under lipstick or alone.  Pucker up and smile!

In other words, it is fine to dress up daily, take care of self, be kind to others, share life and be a beautiful butterfly with courage and happiness. After all, the world is a stage and everyday is your opportunity to play a part in your own play.  So, why not dress for success with a smile!  Audrey did and so can you!

November 2013 Flash - Forever Chic Style - Makeup:  Focus on Fall 2013 makeup.

Gravity (2013): George Clooney and Sandra Bullock

Gravity is a deeply moving film focusing on the survival of two people George Clooney, Matt  Kowalski, an astronaut, and Sandra Bullock, a medical engineer, Ryan Stone.  The visual effects from space are utterly breathtaking and at the same time terrifying.    The story revolves around a mishap by floating space junk which separates both Matt and Ryan from the outside of the shuttle, while in the process of fixing a problem.   The tale spins out of control with the main goal of survival.   The crazy and harrowing efforts to get back to land are bone chilling.  The images of the earth, the deafening silence except for breathing and their own words combined with the will to live keeps the audience on edge.

The film is an expose on how the human condition chooses to survive a horrific or challenging event where all that one has is wits, memories of others and the will to find a winning path against the elements.  Additionally, Gravity, reminds us that we are all just a grain of sand in comparison to the enormity of space.  Scuba drivers most likely have the same feelings when beneath the ocean and it is just themselves versus the sea or mountain climbers knowing that one misstep can end everything. More importantly, the film is about life, death and coming to terms with the life one creates on Earth.   The effect you have on others is profound and the choices made in life are all that matters.   The universe is huge, vast, beautiful and simply beyond comprehension.   The quest for survival, remembering loved ones of the past and present plus the essence of life when caught floating in space is blaring loud.  Gravity is one movie not to be missed.  Afterwards, you will want to go outside and touch the ground, hug your loved ones and be kind and graceful to all mankind on this plant called Earth.

Dolce & Gabbana - Fall 2013

I. Start with Basics for Royal Opulence -  The core basics include black pants, jacket, pencil skirt and blouses.  Think of creating a cake using the best flour, sugar and essential ingredients.  Once baked, a cake designer adds frosting, roses, elements, color and texture. Clothing accessories similar to frosting goodies makes basic apparel glitter amongst the dreary and boring.  Always spend more on basics than on accessories. The following are ideas that can help locate the perfect pieces for Fall 2013.  Print out, either purchase the suggested or search online or in store for similar apparel at different price points.  These are some of my favorite Forever Chic Style brands.
