Red Lips 2021 & Beyond

Red lips are making a huge comeback in 2021 and 2022.   As masks are being removed, the moment has come to show off lips that have been in hiding for over a year and a half.   The hue of red signals strength, resilience, sophistication, intensity and can be inviting.  We deserve a little fun now.  Get ready to brighten your day with a wee bit of lipstick. 

Women throughout the ages have painted or stained their lips a luscious red.  Famous doyennes have worn the color as a symbol of power.    To name a few, Angelina Jolie, Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, Kerry Washington, Elizabeth Taylor, and the list goes on and on.   Those that know me, are aware that red lipstick is my signature lip.   I love red lipstick in many different shades and formulations though they must always have a blue undertone.  For a rule of thumb, here is the "key" to finding the perfect shade.

RED LIP KEY

• Warm Skin Tone:  Chose reds that have orange, copper, gold, or brown undertones in them.
• Cool Skin Tone:     Chose reds that have blue, pink, or plum undertones. 

According to the Wall Street Journal, Saturday/Sunday, June 5-6, 2021, Mali Thomas, Los Angeles, makeup artist, stated that a blue base red can be universally a safe bet.  Turn your wrist over and look at your skin.  You can tell if it is more cool or warm.   Or go to your nearest department store and ask a makeup stylist to assess your skin. 

Red is also the color of red-hot heat.   We are experiencing an unprecedented heat wave in the Pacific Northwest.  It is 100 degrees today in June.  This is crazy, yet has not the last year been one for the ages?  Change, adaptability, patience and waiting for the world to completely open will take time.  Thus, a heat wave is another signal to relax, accept, reflect, and ponder how incredible your life is every day.  You are blessed.   

Hope everyone is keeping cool indoors at home, the mall, pools, lakes or in shading areas.  Drink lots of water.   In the meantime, start choosing your favorite red.   What are you waiting for? Everywhere I go, masks are coming off for the vaccinated.  We are developing a different normalcy and excitement is at the core. 

Relationships, get togethers, parties, functions will have a new tone, new depth, and new beginnings.  The world has been turned upside down and when it rights itself slowly, we will embrace a freshness, marvel at the past, cherish our past experiences and open ourselves to a whatever life brings.  We are survivors.  We are strong.  We are women who wear red in an eagerness to show our persistence, team spirit and acceptance.

While you are at it, have a popsicle to cool down, sit in the shade or slip into a lake, river, or pool.  Become curious about the bees, birds, flowers, trees, and the nature surrounding you.  It is a glorious planet.  Learn patience.  That is the key to everything.  Enjoy the ride called life with a dab of magical red on your lips.
