Jeans - Ripped, Baggy or Classic

Trendy or Modern Classic?

Celebrate Being a Woman!

The Trends

The Classics

Something is in the air this Spring when it comes to jeans now more than ever.   The trendy rage of jeans with holes, rips and bagginess in dark and light denim is present far and wide across the land. Additionally, embellishments of glitter and flowers cemented on the fabric is rampant.  To top it off the "mom" jean from the '80's is making an ugly reappearance. The challenge with these trends is that the eye sees only the distractions rather than the entire ensemble or person.  Of course, the trends are fun, whimsical and youthful.  Yet, apparel draped on a silhouette is all about lines and proportions and when one element screams attention the overall look is lost and questioned.   In comparison, classic dark denim either in a skinny or straight leg jean creates clean lines and flatters from head to toe.   The dark denim blends in with the other hues and construction of the other pieces creating a masterpiece.  Think of buildings, architecture, great art and anything else pleasing to the eye. There is always symmetry.

Just what is urging women to crave wearing clothing off the beaten path? Or clothing that is completely unflattering?  Is it a desire to be noticed or trying to appear youthful?  Audrey Hepburn, Nicole Kidman, Taylor Swift, Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine and Reese Witherspoon all stick with the modern classics and appear ageless. Moreover with the popularity of the rip, torn and baggy painter denim trends is the rise of not wearing a stitch of makeup.  There is a message being touted about having great skin without any help of added color. The reality is that all facial skin whether it is 100% clear needs a little infusion of color added or an elimination of color.  The only time there isn't a need for any makeup is at the gym unless plans are considered after the workout.  Yes, all are aging but why not define age with a little help?  The modern classic always puts the best foot forward.  No pun intended.

More Questions?

The feminine strong role models for women are rare and the androgynous look is rather boring.  In nature, does the female not attract?  Why is it wrong to be attractive with beautiful clothes and a spot of makeup finishing with a bright lip?  The times are a bit mind-boggling and confusing for many. However, make no mistake, throughout history women dressed well in the classic apparel have always stood out and this mantra continues to ring true.  Embrace being a woman, take care of self and remember to be proud of the advantages women have in our society. Intelligence, grace, kindness and dressing appropriately does count.  Finally, remember actions, kind words, standards and ethics reign supreme.

Back to Jeans Please! Trendy or Classic?

Let's get back to the trendy or classic jeans dilemma.  Of course, a choice must be made and as with everything free will is at the forefront.  The right jeans can be empowering in business and in daily life.  Think lines, proportion and fit.   The Pocket Stylist by Kendall Farr is an excellent book on what looks best on three different body types.

What Jeans to Buy?

Jean Mantra:

  • Ripped, Torn and Embellished are seen & noticed first above all else
  • Never wear ripped, torn or overly embellished to work
  • Choose only dark denim for a slimming effect
  • Light blue denim if thin
  • Rips on knees can look like eyes peering out
  • Embellishments can make jeans look dirty
  • Fringe at the bottom of jeans can get filthy

Jeans are the cornerstone of America's history and originally intended for the cowboys and minors becoming popular in the 1950's.  Today, jeans are worn anywhere and everywhere, are comfortable and a staple that cannot be dismissed.  When selecting a pair of jeans, the Modern Classic loves dark denim, clean lines, stretch material and high quality.   Trendy or classic is a choice for the ages. Trends can be expensive and here today and gone tomorrow whereas a classic remains eternal. Of course, now and then a little fun is needed. So dance with flowers, embellishments and add color. Take heart, be forewarned and know that ripped and embellished jeans will be critically judged.  If happy with choice and do not care what the world thinks - enjoy the madness.  If desired to be seen as elegant, timeless and having Forever Chic Style - well then it is easy - chose denim that is dark with clean lines.   Act with grace, speak kindly and walk with a smile.  All else is sprinkles.
