Year of Being Considerate

Sporting Winter White for the Dark Days of Winter

The winter cold and beautiful blue skies along with whitest snow are indeed breathtaking to the beholder.   With each bright and shiny day the darkness appears earlier and earlier until it slowly reverses.   During the long freezing evenings books are read, binge watching is commencing and even adult coloring comes into play in front of a fire with family or a loved one.   Of course, everyone spends their time differently yet this scenario does sound rather cozy and nice.  Add a dog by the fire, or maybe a cat and a glass of wine for a worthy stage of joy and peace.  Of course while thinking about the year ahead and perhaps tomorrow's apparel choices - why not add a dusting of manners to the mix for a stellar start.   How about setting aside the greys, blacks, browns apparel hues and instead snap up everything gloriously winter white.  Why, if we must - yes, please!

Manners

Adventures of Alice in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll

"Have some wine," the March Hare said in an encouraging tone.

Alice looked all around the table, but there was nothing on it but tea. "I don't see any wine," she remarked.

"There isn't any," said the March Hare.

"Then it wasn't very civil of you to offer it," said Alice angrily.

"It wasn't very civil of you to sit down without being invited," said the March Hare.

"I didn't know it was your table," said Alice: "it's laid for a great many more than three."

"Your hair wants cutting," said the Hatter. He had been looking at Alice for some time with great curiosity, and this was his first speech.
"You should learn not to make personal remarks," Alice said with some severity: "it's very rude."

Be a Gracious Hostess and not a March Hare

1. Offer Refreshments at Home: "Would you like a glass of wine, coffee or water?"  "Would you like a spot of tea?"
2. When asked Please Answer:  "Why, yes please." or rather "No, thank you."
3. No Personal Statements at the Table:  "Red lipstick looks horrid on you or you need a hair cut." So tragic to break the sparkling mood around the table or in home with a judgmental comment.
4. Seating and Napkins:  Did you all know this or remember?
  • Seated:  When seated - immediately unfold the napkin and place on lap with the fold close to body and the edges facing outward.  (Better to use your hands)
  • Leaving the Table for Moment or Two: When leaving the table for a minute of two - place napkin on the chair.
  • Done Eating and Leaving the Table: When done eating and ready to leave the table - take the napkin, loosely folded and place to the right of the place setting.
5. No Cell Phone Please at the Table:    If you need to check your cell phone, remove oneself from the table, place the napkin on the chair and say, "Excuse me please. I will be back in a moment"

Wintery White Sweater

 I.  Winter White Sweaters:  Wear winter white sweaters either by a fire, or out an about during the day.  The beauty of elegant white highlights the face, the hair and overall evokes an angelic appearance.

II.  Winter White Coat:  A perfectly white coat for the stormy days of winter adds a bit of brightness wherever worn.   Of course, a white outerwear coat can get dirty yet this is why we have washer and dryer machines! Right.  Choose wisely.  Look for fit that allows a sweater underneath and furthers warmth. Baby it is cold outside!

___________

Yes or No?

Do you say Yes or No more often when asked to events, parties, speaking engagements, walks in the park etc.?  Chances are as you get older we all learn to say No more often than not. We think it is to protect our time yet really we are saying No to ourselves - to a moment of joy or to the unknown.   And, additionally in saying No we lose spontaneity.   Our lives become scripted, planned out with times, dates and places all mapped with finite details that resemble nothing like our youth. Reflect and marvel at children who make snow angels, play and just live with smiles and so much fun.   Remember those days - perhaps even in college or high school the days were filled with last minute rendezvouses where nothing was thought out.   Conversely, when everything is scheduled to the max stress levels tend to rise.   Of course, saying Yes all the time never works either based on lifestyle, work, children, finances or just too many things in one day to accomplish.  However,  maybe make a goal to say "Yes" twice a month in the New Year towards something to do with a friend, a loved one or just yourself.  It could be getting a coffee, a walk or just a call - not a text or email but a real phone call.  Say Yes to sitting in your office, by the fire and doing absolutely nothing for 15 minutes. That's right  - nothing.  We need to recharge, rest our minds and let the world stop of a moment or two. It is the only way we can see what the next step is in the journey of life.

Yes, saying Yes can be freeing and in fact exhilarating.  Everything doesn't need to be planned or picture (Facebook, Instagram) perfect.  Say Yes to others and more importantly say Yes to you.

Joy - The Movie

Have you seen the flick Joy? Well, the movie is fun, entertaining, creative, lively and ultimately has a wonderful message.   Ms. Lawrence, throughout the film wears the classic button down white shirt.  The apparel suggestion for 2016 is to pick up a brand spanking new white button down blouse and relish the incredible ways that this one piece can be styled.

III. The White Blouse:  In a fashionistas's closet the one item that always reigns supreme is the classic white blouse. Seriously, this number can be worn alone with leggings or nice pants, underneath sweaters and any other way possible.

Winter white is a true classic apparel choice during the dark of winter.   Along the way of selecting winter white apparel become a gracious hostess, open doors and say Yes to you and the New Year.  We are all a collection of unique snowflakes to be noticed and seen.  Thus, take the time, slow down, be considerate and focus on the present.  If you do - you will see the world and its people as it truly is - beautiful, strong, ever changing and magnificent.
