87th Academy Awards 2015 - Fashion Overview

Movie Birdman and Fashion Soared Every Mountain

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

The hills are alive with the sound of music
With songs they have sung for a thousand years
The hills fill my heart with the sound of music
My heart wants to sing every song it hears

The 87th Academy Awards, Sunday, February 22, 2015  held on a rain soaked evening in Hollywood with A-listers gingerly stepping out of limousines and hurriedly dashing for cover.  The ladies of the court donned frocks resplendent in shades of Jessica Rabbit reds, pearly whites, blush nudes, decadent blacks and glittering glitz.  Likewise, the gents donned tuxes in black and white along with various shades of color adding to the fashion drama of the night.   In a year, where films were perhaps a bit flat with heavy themes and few popular block busters, fashion followed suit and was slightly lackluster. Thus, on this stormy night the Oscar affair consisted primarily of independent films, somber fashion, scripted preachy speeches, song and dance routines along with stilted witty quips from host Neil Patrick Harris.

Lady Gaga - Stole the Show

Climb every mountain,
Ford every stream,
Follow every rainbow,
'Till you find your dream.

The highlight of the evening was the 50th anniversary tribute to The Sound of Music (1965).  Lady Gaga dressed in a white ball gown with silvery hair nailed a compilation of songs from the infamous film.  The audience along with Julie Andrews were stunned by the performance.   Lady Gaga stepped up and showcased unbelievable old school singing talent along with perfect fashion. And, yes there were a number of savvy fashionistas dressed to the nines and several thespians that gave prolific presentations and or acceptance speeches.  Therefore, all was not lost and as always fashion did have a few unforgettable moments.

A dream that will need
All the love you can give,
Every day of your life
For as long as you live.

Forever Chic Style - "The Stylish" Mavens

Chose to NOT show ample skin and instead glow and act like movie stars!

Reese Witherspoon:  "Wild in Blue"  Witherspoon, nominated for Best Actress, in Wild, glided on the red carpet in a breathtaking silhouette defining baby blue and black Tom Ford gown.  The luminous skin, makeup and wavy hair combined with twinkling earrings, bracelets and baby blue eyes finished the ensemble with aplomb.

Juliana Moore: "Screen Siren 20's Glamour"  Moore Best Actress in Stay Alice wore a custom made Chanel delicately crafted with 80K beads.   The gorgeous off the shoulder gown, hair, make up and Chopard earrings screamed "movie star".  Additionally, Moore gave a moving acceptance speech that included highlighting the illness of Alzheimer's disease as portrayed in the film Stay Alice.

Lupita Nyong'o: "Gleaming Pearl"   The Calvin Klein Collection gown featured 6000 creamy white pearls.  The cut, fit and iridescence of the pearly piece was show stopping and statement making.  The subtle makeup, gorgeous skin, hair and bright lip completed the vision.

Cate Blanchett:  "Two-Time Oscar Winner Wowed" Blanchett presented the Academy Award for Best Actor, glided across the stage in a high neck black gown with a glamorous Tiffany's necklace laced with turquoises and aquamarine stones combined with diamonds in a variety of cuts.  Once again, Blanchett took center stage and commands a queenly presence.

Emma Stone: "Old Hollywood Style with a Twist"   The chartreuse custom Elie Saab frock along with stunning bright coral lips and Veronica Lake curls caused star frenzy on the red carpet.  Stone, nominated for Best Supporting Actress, for  Birdman was gracious, lovely and even handled a red carpet moment with grace.

Birdman - Best Original Screenplay - Alejandro González Iñárritu

"Birdman" Scene with (Stone) as Sam speaking to Birdman (Keaton) -

SAM:   Means something to who? You had a career before the third comic book movie, before people began to forget who was inside the bird costume. You’re doing a play based on a book that was written 60 years ago, for a thousand rich old white people whose only real concern is gonna be where they go to have their cake and coffee when it’s over. And let’s face it, Dad, it’s not for the sake of art. It’s because you want to feel relevant again. Well, there’s a whole world out there where people fight to be relevant every day. And you act like it doesn’t even exist! Things are happening in a place that you willfully ignore, a place that has already forgotten you. I mean, who are you? You hate bloggers. You make fun of Twitter. You don’t even have a Facebook page. You’re the one who doesn’t exist. You’re doing this because you’re scared to death, like the rest of us, that you don’t matter. And you know what? You’re right. You don’t. It’s not important. You’re not important. Get used to it.

Forever Chic Style - "If Only"

Felicity Jones:  "Cinderalla"  Jones nominated for Best Actress in The Theory of Everything donned a dove gray Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen gown that was beautifully designed.  A gorgeous red lip would have sealed the deal and made this ensemble soar to the top of the fashion charts.

Jessica Chastain:  "Two Dresses in One"  Chastain a style diva wore a midnight blue Givenchy twinkling concoction that emphasized an curvy hourglass figure.  The effect was simply divine though the hair and makeup minimalism did not match the dress.  Remove the Piaget necklace and favor a decadent drop earring and perhaps a stronger lip.

Naomi Watts: "Prom Dress"   Watts Armani silver and black graphic halter top gown was reminiscent of a prom dress.  The edgy gown was not befitting of an Oscar night.  The hair, makeup and drop earring were perfection.

Scarlett Johansson: "Jolly Green Grace Jones"  Johansson draped in head to toe emerald green Atelier Versace dress was a mess of a masterpiece. The necklace and short hairdo was enough to send the fashion industry into a state of silent shock.

Gwyneth Paltrow:  "Pale Pink Again"  The Ralph & Russo Couture pale pink one shoulder dress with a rose was over the top with too many elements.  The pink flattered Paltrow's creamy complexion yet missed the spot on the fashion meter though the drop earrings were gorgeous.

Margo Robbie: “Stop the Presses"  Robbie evoked Hollywood glamour in a stunning black Saint Laurent dress along with Van Cleef & Arpels necklace created in the 1930's for the Duchess of Windsor.  Ladies take note - this dress and ensemble is an example of how to look like a movie star.

Forever Chic Style -  "The Queen"

Dakota Johnson:  “One Shade of Riveting Red ”  Johnson draped in a Saint Laurent one shoulder dress with hair in a fresh ponytail and sensational red lip was the Forever Chic Style Queen of the evening.  This 50 Shades of Grey actress dressed the part of a leading actress with all of the right accessories.  The end result combined with a mother and daughter repartee on the red carpet and presentation skills signaled this star is on the rise.  Mother, Melanie Griffith, was additionally pretty in a black gown emphasizing a gorgeous figure.  Both dressed for the red carpet and were completely mesmerizing.

Forever Chic Style - "The Frumpy Queen"

Nicole Kidman: "Clashing Red"   Kidman's a fashionista  on the red carpet donned a Louis Vuitton off the shoulder sparkler gown that frankly did not flatter.  The red belt, red hair and multicolored gown with unfinished hem created the perfect violent storm. Sadly, Kidman a red carpet winner made every effort in 2015 to land in last place grabbing The Frumpy Queen award.
