The Great Gatsby (2013): Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher

The Great Gatsby 2013 film rendition is spellbindingly beautiful, bold and overall a breathtaking painting composite of the roaring 1920's combined with an excellent story and exceptional acting.   The Great Gatsby is a 1924 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald which follows a cast of characters living in a fictional place called West Egg on Long Island in the summer of 1922.  The primary story surrounds the young and mysterious millionaire, Leonardo Dicaprio, Jay Gatsby and his obsession with Carey Mulligan, Daisy Buchanan married to Joel Edgerton, Tom Buchanan a known philander.

The tale begins with narrator Tobey Maquire, Nick Carraway, writing a book about Jay Gatsby.  The story is told by a series of flashbacks beginning with Nick's travel from the Midwest to Manhattan, New York in the spring of 1922.  A young man filled with ambition, finds himself amongst the bootleggers and glittering jazz followers of the night while working in the money hungry obsessed Wall Street.  Nick lives next door in a cottage to Gatsby's outlandish gorgeous mansion who has weekly lavish parties for Manhattan's elite.  Yet, Gatsby, remains an enigma.  Daisy & Tom's house is across the bay from Gatsby's stunning mansion.   Nick often sees Gatsby staring absently at the green light at the end of Daisy's dock across the bay foreshadowing a story of a long lost love. Daisy is vapid and spoiled living a luxurious lifestyle though careless in all her endeavors.  Nick is drawn into the land of the super rich laden with illusions, boredom, lust and lies.   Gatsby's overall goal is to see Daisy again and rekindle a lost love by using Nick as the connection.   Nick falls easily into Gatsby's plan leading to drama, pain and ultimately tragedy.

Nick pens a tale of unrequited love amidst a decadent lifestyles laced with no morals or standards in humanity. The saga portrays two of the main characters, Tom and Daisy, as self absorbed and pathetic individuals with no conscious for their fellow man.   Sadly, the story  mirrors modern times and the struggles existing today.  The audience finds exception's with Gatsby and Nick.  Gatsby, though in a shady business, only wanted Daisy to love him back and Nick was just an innocent bystander pulled into a world of decadence and corruptness.

The cast is exceptional with Decaprio as Gatsby, Maguire as Nick, Mulligan as Daisy, Edgerton as Tom and Isla Fisher as Tom's mistress Mrytle.   The script and story is incredible, acting spine chilling brilliant, chemistry spot on between the players, costumes stunning and sets grand.   This film captures the essence of the classic 88 year old book. The modern music completes the painting.  The finest hour of story telling and definitely one film not to be missed this summer.
